7 Secrets I Bet You Didn’t Know About Broccoli

Blog

Love it or hate it, broccoli has it ALL going on!

Do you ever get nostalgic for things you did in your youth?? I do, and I used to live in Italy.  From a recent trip there, I decided to re-ignite my knowledge of the Italian language, so I am back in the classroom on an evening re-learning Italian. The other day, the topic was food – (one of my favourite topics 🙂) and I learnt a fun fact!  I learnt that although broccoli has been around for 2000 years, for the Italians, it has been a precious food since the Roman Empire. However, when first introduced in England in the mid-18th century, broccoli was referred to as “Italian asparagus.” So there you have it! A bit of history thrown into your day. Now onto the healthy stuff…and those 7 secrets that you may not have know about the health benefits of broccoli: Broccoli in a wooden bowl.1. improves digestion, 2. lowers cholesterol levels, 3. detoxifies the body, 4. boosts the immune system, 5. protects the skin, 6. lowers blood pressure, 7. improves vision and eye health. Bonus fact: it is also an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin C, chromium and folate. So now you know why broccoli is worth eating, let’s look at how you can add more of it to your meals!
  • Enjoy raw broccoli by dipping it in hummus, seasoned tahini, or guacamole.
  • Or finely chop or shred it and add it to salads.
  • To retain the most nutrients in cooked broccoli, steam it, then drizzle it with extra virgin olive oil, olive tapenade, or a savoury nut butter sauce.
  • You can also lightly saute broccoli in coconut oil, oven-roast it in avocado oil, and add it to dishes like stir-fries, soups, stews, frittata, and fajitas.
  • Blend raw or frozen broccoli into smoothies.
Whichever way you choose to eat your broccoli it, it is a good way to upgrade your nutrient intake and help look after your health.
