Why You Keep Leaving Your Body on ‘Read’
Ever since I was little, I have been quietly fascinated by the relationship people have with their bodies.
Growing up, I naturally just listened to mine. It wasn’t a conscious decision; it simply felt normal. While everyone else seemed to follow the crowd, I happily wandered in a slightly different direction. I never liked ice in my drinks, so I always took it out. I never felt the need for caffeine (I know, gasp!), and I have actually never been drunk. None of that ever felt like deprivation and to this day still doesn’t. I still had so much fun on nights out and enjoyed life just as much as anyone else.
But what truly baffled me was watching people do things their bodies were so clearly protesting against.
You know the drill. Complaining about feeling absolutely terrible after eating something, only to choose it again the very next day. Pushing through deep exhaustion just to tick one more thing off a never-ending to-do list. The signals from our bodies are so glaringly obvious, yet we are incredibly skilled at ignoring them.
Why do we override ourselves so easily? Why do we trust the expectations of everyone around us more than our own internal compass?
If you are someone who spends their days holding it all together, managing the career, the relationships, the endless responsibilities, this probably sounds quite familiar.
Your behaviours make perfect sense. They are shaped by stress, emotional needs, and the constant noise telling you how you should be living. But somewhere along the way, the conversation with your own body gets completely muted.
As you know, your body is a highly intelligent system, and it is constantly trying to chat with you.
Hunger, fullness, cravings, fatigue, and sudden mood dips are not annoying inconveniences. They certainly are not failures of your willpower. They are just information. They are your body’s way of politely (and sometimes loudly) guiding you back to balance.
Think of it like the warning lights on your car dashboard. You wouldn’t stick a piece of tape over the ‘low fuel’ light and just hope for the best, would you? Yet, that is exactly what we do when we eat while scrolling on our phones, or push through a massive wall of tiredness with sheer force.
Your body is the most loyal ally you will ever have. It breathes for you, digests for you, and quietly works the night shift to repair things while you sleep. But to actually hear what it needs, we have to turn down the external noise.
The good news? The moment you become curious again, that connection bounces back surprisingly fast.
You don’t need a dramatic overhaul or another set of complicated rules. It begins with something wonderfully simple: slowing down just enough to notice what your body is already telling you.
When you start recognising your own true hunger, your need for rest, and your natural rhythms, a massive shift happens. Your body stops feeling like a stubborn problem to solve, and starts feeling like a supportive friend.
The answers you are searching for have been inside you all along. Sometimes, you just need a little bit of space to finally hear them.
So, what is your body asking for right now?
A glass of water?
A proper stretch?
Five minutes of absolute silence?
Go on, give it a listen.
