The importance of Primary Foods

When I trained to become a Health Coach, I was particularly interested in learning about what really nourishes us as human beings. Many of us understand the importance of good food and how important it is that we feed our bodies well through the food we eat but food is actually a secondary source of nourishment.

What really nourishes us, what really gets to the core of our happiness and determines how enjoyable and worthwhile our lives feel are known as the Primary Foods. To have the four following primary foods in balance will ultimately fill our souls and satisfy our hunger for life. Healthy relationships, a fulfilling career, a spiritual practice, and regular physical activity are our primary foods. Anything that you feel passionate about is a primary food for you.

Most of us hunger for play, touch, romance, intimacy, love, achievement, success, art, music, self-expression, excitement, adventure and spirituality.

Sometimes we are fed not by food but by the energy in our lives. Think back to when you felt really alive, really happy and fulfilled – how much was food playing a role in that – or was it the person you were with, the experience you were having or the job you were doing really well in?

On the flip side, we all know that if something is not going well in relationships or at work, or we simply cannot get enough exercise in our day, it can lead to changes in our mood, what we crave to eat, what we crave to drink and poor eating habits can start to develop. This in turn can lead to digestive problems, skin problems, emotional problems and a general feeling of being unwell. A visit to the doctor to deal with any of these symptoms of the bigger picture won’t solve the real issue and this is where a vicious circle begins.

As a Holistic Health Coach, I look deeply into my clients Primary foods as a starting point and I see what is out of balance and what needs attention. I’d always look into these areas before going into the ins and outs of what they eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
